How Does Balloon Sinuplasty Work?
At Meyerson Sinus Center, we perform balloon sinuplasty procedures in-office. This tends to cut down on the overall balloon sinuplasty cost. Between that and your insurance coverage, the out-of-pocket expense shouldn't be too devastating to your bank account.
During a balloon sinuplasty, a small, flexible tube gets inserted into the affected sinus cavity. An ENT specialist will slide the balloon catheter through the tube into the sinus cavity and inflate to widen the sinuses. Once opened, the catheter gets removed and a saline spray will rinse any pus and/or mucus buildup from the cavity.
The balloon sinuplasty procedure is minimally invasive, you can expect a quick recovery time. You will go home with mild discomfort as the anesthesia wears off. You can take over-the-counter pain relievers to alleviate the pain and discomfort.
There will also be less bleeding because the procedure doesn't remove any sinus tissue. You can expect any drainage to be discolored for the first few days. You won't have any visible scarring or bruising with the balloon sinuplasty.
Your doctor might prescribe a medicated saline rinse to promote nasal hygiene as a type of aftercare. The rinse will flush out any leftover mucus and debris in the sinus and nasal cavities. It also promotes healing and prevents infection, scarring and buildup.
Who Is an Ideal Candidate for the Procedure?
The ideal candidate for a balloon sinuplasty is going to be an adult (without nasal polyps or tumors) who has a type of recurrent sinusitis that doesn't seem to improve with regular medication. While children are less ideal candidates, there are some scenarios in which a child might benefit from the procedure.
Those with certain areas affected by the sinusitis might benefit from the procedure, including the maxillary sinuses (in the cheeks), the frontal sinuses (in the forehead), or the sphenoid sinuses (in the back of the nose). This type of procedure is for those individuals who can tolerate local anesthesia. You will be conscious for the duration of the balloon sinuplasty.
If for any reason, you are ineligible for this procedure, sinus surgery is still an option to get relief from your chronic sinusitis.
