This procedure is most commonly suggested for those with suffer from chronic sinusitis, or blocked airways. Think of how the start of spring has brought on pollen and with that all the sneezes- chronic sinutitis is kind of similar except more and throughout most of the year. So what exactly is balloon sinuplasty?

Also known as the balloon catheter dilation surgery, or “smart sinus” procedure, it was first introduced in the early 2000’s. The procedure itself is to help patients who suffer from blocked sinuses or chronic sinusitis, helping to clear those airways and passages. The surgery is performed in an ENT specialist’s office or hospital and can be done under general or local anesthesia, which you and your doctor will discuss before the surgery takes place.

By using a small device inserted into your sinus cavity, your doctor will slowly start to expand a thin, flexible balloon attached to the device, which then starts to expand the opening of your airways. During these cold winter months, many of us have had to combat with chilly weather and attacks of the cold. As we wish for those warmer spring and summer months to finally make their way back into our lives, we are also faced with the challenge that these warmer months bring, such as seasonal allergies. Many of us have heard about our sinuses before, but how many of us actually know what exactly our sinuses entail?

Our sinuses are made up of a hollow cavities throughout your skull that connect to one another. Much of these cavities or tunnels, are lined with soft, pink tissue that is called mucosa. Everyone’s sinuses should be relatively clear except for this very thin layer of mucus along the walls. While you may start envisioning giant sized craters tunneling though out your head, remember that the largest of one of these cavities is about an inch wide, while all the others are much smaller. This cavity is located in your cheekbones and is known as the maxillary sinuses. Between your eyes, you can find the ethmoid sinuses, while your sphenoid sinuses are in the bones that are behind your nose. Lastly there is the frontal sinuses in the low-center of the forehead.

So why do we have these sinuses? What exactly is their purpose? Experts have a theory that the sinuses are there to help humidify the air we breathe in. The ridges that run along the inside of your nose are called turbinates, which help to filter out and humidify the air you breathe in. Our sinuses mostly drain through a small channel into the nose. This drainage pathway is referred to as the “middle meatus”.

While the vast majority of individuals suffer at least once with seasonal allergies, there are other sinus conditions that can just as irritating, and in some cases even more serious.

Inside your nose along the nasal cavities, there are a series of structures made out of thin bone and covered by a soft spongey membranes called turbinates.
